“My wife and I were sitting on the porch, I
heard a series of popping noises, when I looked around I saw my living
room was full of black smoke; then fire started to break out through the
windows.” This is how James Story describes what happened, last week, to
his family’s mobile home at 27295 Peach Creek in New Caney. Fortunately
no one was injured. At the time of the fire, their son was in the
hospital and their daughter was visiting a neighborhood friend. The James
Story family lost everything.

According to fire officials at the scene,
the fire started between the walls of the bedroom. The popping noises
heard were coming from the circuit breaker as they snapped open. A
neighbor called 911 almost immediately. In this rural area of New Caney
the fire department is located some distance from the Story home. By the
time firefighters arrived the home was totally destroyed.
Neighbors and other
generous folks who have heard of the Story’s situation have brought the
bags of clothing and some pieces of furniture. Mrs. Story’s father
loaned the family his 20 foot travel trailer as a temporary residence. It
is a small place for two adults and two teenagers. The destroyed mobile
home was insured, but not for replacement value. When asked what the
family’s most immediate needs are, Mr. Story replied, “A job, clothes that
fit, and a new home”. James Story is currently unemployed.
