When Junior Girl Scout troop 3343 from Willow Creek Elementary School planned their goals for 2005, they decided they wanted to do something for others.  The troop hit on a plan to sell Girl Scout Cookie cookies to customers in the community, and to sell cookies to send to the soldiers in Iraq.

With the help of Ann Vargo, a Girl Scout mom, the plan was put into action.  Vargo contacted the base commander at Fort Hood with the plan.  She was directed to the USO who was thrilled with the idea of sending cookies to the soldiers.  The USO will also ensure that the cookies will be shipped to our soldiers in Iraq.

“When we started our cookie sales this year we had no idea how to sell the idea of purchasing cookies for the soldiers in Iraq, but once the customers understood what our Girl Scouts were attempting to do, the enthusiasm flowed.  The generosity of Kingwood residents is unbelievable,” said Vargo.

The troop goal was to sell 1500 boxes of cookies; so far they have sold over 2300 boxes.  “We are not sure, at this time, how many boxes we have sold for the soldiers.  Our goal is 500 boxes, but I am sure we will exceed that number,” said Margie McGuffey, Troop 3343 leader.

Troop 3343 will be setting up a ‘Cookie Shop’ in front of Kroger’s, at the corner of Lake Houston and Northpark, on Feb. 26 between the hours of 2:00 and 5:00 p.m.  The girls are hopeful that they will exceed all expectations in the sales of Girl Scout cookies for the soldiers serving in Iraq.

Some of the profits that the troop earns from the sale of the cookies will be used to purchase additional Girl Scout cookies for the soldiers.  Other profits will go toward tsunami relief.

In fulfilling their annual goal of cookie sales, the troop will also complete the ‘Sign of the Sun,’ a Girl Scout activity that represents service to our country and to others.

If you are interested in purchasing cookies for the soldiers in Iraq, Troop 3343 invites you to come to the   ‘Cookie Shop’ in front of Kroger’s on Feb. 26.
